Charybdis by JMarcDodsonJr Charybdis by JMarcDodsonJr
Charybdis from Homer's The Odyssey for my graduate thesis.

Edit (12/20/11) *
This is an updated version with changes made using the critique I was given by the class instructor this was for, good friend and one of the most amazing illustrators I've ever seen, Christopher Burdett ( [link] ) .

It was for a directed studies class that I took with a cool friend of mine as the mentor, Christopher Burdett, he's a phenomenal artist. We worked on it all semester, but really the designing of him took way longer than the digital painting. The digital painting did take a while though, but really only because I'm just learning how to digitally paint and create creatures. I salivate at the thought of becoming a creature designer like Neville Page one day :)

Jeeez! That's a terrifying little creature you got there. :o

Looks like it's straight out of a Resident Evil game. ^^

I haven't played any of the Resident Evil games, but I think it could be fun to face him in a God of War game :)

I was always told Charybdis was a sort of sentient whirlpool. I like this better though, a nice take on an old legend.

According to Greek mythology, which has many different authors such as Homer and Virgil and many many others, Charybdis isn't the whirlpool herself, she is the demigod who causes the whirlpool. She does it three times a day, every day, by sucking in vast amounts of water in her mouth. She is the daughter of Poseidon and even comes on land to cause destruction and mayhem at her father's bidding.

Greek mythology is CRAZY, lol. That's why it's so fun to illustrate.

Lol that makes more sense. We were taught from an "appropriate" watered down version of the books.

I used to be a teacher and I know how sad it is to teach from a text book. They water down the information so much from most literature as to not have to answer hard questions. It's a shame, because a lot of what is cut out of these classic tales are what makes them magical in the first place. I never appreciated the Odyssey or the Illiad in high school, it wasn't until I read the unabridged versions that they became as awesome to me as they are now. I can understand why they've been around so long now, they're amazing and fantastical stories.

Thanks :) I find that the usual depictions we've seen made after the author's telling of the story rarely match what the story told us. Most of Homer's characters were told of in many stories and by many different orators. I like to take what's been said and try and represent it as best as I can. I do still put my swing on the creatures, since that is half the fun ;p
